The Planning Commission consists of seven community members who are appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the City Council. Commission members serve 3-year terms and may reapply once the term is completed. It is the function and duty of the Planning Commission to prepare a Master Plan For Land Use and to advise the City Council in regard to the proper development of the City of Novi.
The Planning Commission also reviews and makes recommendations to the City Council on all requests for changes to the Zoning Ordinance text or map. Rezoning requests or changes to the ordinance may be proposed by property owners, a developer, the Planning Commission or City Planning staff, and are always presented as a public hearing to allow the Commission to receive comment and feedback on the proposed zoning changes before the Commission makes a recommendation to the City Council.
The Commission is also responsible for the review and approval or denial of developer’s requests for most of the new industrial, commercial and residential development site plans within the City. Certain zoning districts authorize the Planning Commission to make recommendations to the City Council on proposed development projects. Annually, the Planning Commission reviews the 6-year Capital Improvement Plan for approval to be used as a part of the City’s budget.
